Also known as “wiener dogs” or “sausage dogs” due to their long bodies and short legs, dachshunds were originally bred in Germany for hunting badgers. Their elongated bodies and excellent sense of smell made them well-suited for tracking and going into burrows. Dachshunds come in different sizes, including standard, miniature, and toy. They also have three coat varieties: smooth, long-haired, and wire-haired. Each variety has its distinct charm and personality. ORIGIN/HISTORY
The Dachshund was developed in Germany to be a dog that hunted close to the hunter, much like the Basset Hound in France. They are descended from the German Schweisshund, of which they are a shorter-legged version. Dachshunds come in two sizes and three coat types of various colors and patterns. The word ‘icon’ is overworked, but the Dachshund’with his unmistakable long-backed body, little legs, and big personality is truly an icon of purebred dogdom.
The general appearance of a Dachshund
Known for their short legs paired with a long body, these little “weiner dogs” are well-endeared for their distinctive shape that hovers low to the ground. They also have large, floppy ears and an extended muzzle with a head that tapers to the end of the nose. A typical dachshund is long-bodied and muscular with short stubby legs. Its front paws are disproportionately large, being paddle-shaped and particularly suitable for digging. Its skin is loose enough not to tear while tunneling in tight burrows to chase prey. Its snout is long.

Body of A Dachshund
The Dachshund is a long-bodied, characteristically lively dog with a deep chest, short legs, tapering muzzle, and long ears. Usually reddish brown or black-and-tan, it is bred in two sizes—standard and miniature—and in three coat types—smooth, longhaired, and wirehaired.
Coat of A Dachshund
Dachshund Breed Standard (8), the coat of shorthaired variety is short, dense, shiny, smooth fitting, tight and harsh, often slightly wavy without any bald patches. A longhaired variety is characterised by the sleek shiny coat with an undercoat close fitting to the body.
Color of A Dachshund
The self, or solid, colors in dachshunds are red, cream, black and tan, black and cream, chocolate and tan, blue and tan, and isabella (fawn) and tan. All dachshunds have one, and only one, self-color. The patterns found in dachshunds are dapple, double dapple, brindle, sable, and piebald.
